Smarter Pest Control Moves through the Orchards

Smarter Pest Control Moves through the Orchards Smarter Pest Control Moves through the Orchards Smarter Pest Control Moves Through the OrchardsSensors and computer analytics have penetrated agriculture and farming, transforming the common tractor and other equipment into high-tech machines that offer precision and predictability in sowing seeds and reaping crops. But one segment has remained largely untouched. Farmers fruchtweinly apply pesticides the old-fashioned way, spraying fields and orchards with equipment that hasnt much changed in decades. That is poised to change with the development of what U.S. Department of Agriculture and Ohio State University researchers claim is the first mit niveau sprayer, driven by high-speed sensors and algorithms that compute the optimum level of pesticides to apply through each of a standard sprayers 40 nozzles. That could greatly reduce the amount of chemicals used and help alleviate runoff, one of the largest sources of nonpoint source pollutio n in the U.S.In most cases, fields are oversprayed, says Heping Zhu, a USDA agricultural engineer and Ohio State University adjunct professor. Current technology is constrained in the rate of application. For instance, in a 100-gallon acre of spray volume, you spray without thinking of crop size, density rate, or other parameters. For You Drones Take Farming to a Whole New LevelZhu, along with OSU agricultural engineering professor Erdal Ozkan and collaborators at Oregon State University and the University of Tennessee, designed a spray ordnungsprinzip using laser sensors to refine the practice. We use the laser sensors like an eye to detect a tree, its size and shape, and plant density to decide spray volume, Zhu says. It only sprays to targets. The intelligent sprayer testing and design team. Image Ohio State UniversityUsing conventional sprayers, growers turn the sprayer on at the beginning of a row of trees and simply stop spraying at the other end. The sprayers are fitted to the front of a tractor that moves up and down rows of plants or trees, but it does notlage recognize any variations in plant height, density, or terrain. The new system works the same way, but the amount of chemicals used is dramatically reduced, results confirmed by testing in commercial fields over the past four years. It is not a robotic system, some of which are being developed for weed control.Compared to conventional sprayers, the intelligent system reduced pesticide use by more than half, reduced spray drift by up to 87% and lowered spray loss on the ground by up to 93%. The same level of pest control was reported as from a conventional sprayer. That can mean big savings for growers as well a big boost for the environment. Growers used more than 1 billion pounds of chemicals on crops in 2017, according to statistics from USDA. Much of that excess finds itself polluting rivers and streams. Lake Eries persistent summer algae bloom is tied to agricultural runoff, as is the giant dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.Overuse of pesticides may also be linked to the die off of pollinators critical to agriculture. There is a pollinator crisis, Zhu says. The population of bees has decreased due to heavy use of pesticides.Testing began in 2009, initially on nurseries with a wide variety of crops. It was then expanded to orchards and vineyards. Growers who used the intelligent sprayer reported chemical savings reaching $230 per acre annually, says Zhu. That means a grower with a 100-acre field would recoup the capital cost within one year. The sprayer itself has 40 nozzles fitted to an attachment, 20 on top and 20 on the bottom. As the tractor moves along the row, the sensors detect the height, width and density of individual trees or plants. Working from algorithms written for the project, the analytics program computes exactly where to targetand where not to spray. For instance, it ignores gaps between trees, spraying directly on target, and can reach heights of 60 feet, a measure common for pecan trees. We wrote our own program for tree structures, for the system to make the decision where to spray, Zhu says, crediting postdoctoral researchers with the task. The sensors put out 43,200 points per second to read the targets, bouncing the data back to the system. The system is so accurate that it can differentiate seasonal tree cover, for instance. There will be fewer leaves earlier in the year, compared to later in the growing season. It accommodates for the discrepancy, doling out the appropriate volume of chemicals. Zhu says it works with the same efficiencies at any speed. You dont have to worry about how fast you drive, he says. The system takes over.Zhu and other project researchers claim the system, built with off-the-shelf equipment and customized analytics, is unique, and they anticipate commercial commitment soon. No one else has done this, Zhu says.Researchers at Clemson University and Texas AM University joined the project in 2015, expanding the testing to orchards. The concept has been proven over five to six years of testing in the field, Zhu says.Zhu and his team now are devising a method to retrofit the system to existing sprayers, a development that would further reduce the expense. The system has already won awards from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and 2018 Innovator of the Year Award from OSUs College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.Read MoreA New Solution to Water Purification in Rural AreasLow-Tech Solutions Fight HungerSelf-Powered Soft Bot Fuels New ApplicationsCurrent technology is constrained in the rate of application. When to Make a Decision for Your Boss - The Muse

When to Make a Decision for Your Boss - The MuseWhen to Make a Decision for Your Boss Your boss is on vacation and something comes up at the office- an executive decision needs to be made. Do you step in? Its a situation that plenty of employees will face at some point in their careers. I know almost everyone on my kollektiv has had to deal with it before. Depending on the company you work for, its culture, your role, and a variety of other factors, some employees may encounter this scenario more often than others. When it happens, how do you decide whether you have the right to make that executive decision or not? Here are a few things to consider.1. What Is the Company Culture Like?At some businesses, innovation, ideas, and self-starters are prized, and at others, traditional layers of management are the norm. If you work for a company at which the boss tends to takes a laissez-faire approach, you can feel a more confident in making high-level decisions, even if youre not the boss. Consider my company for example For a long time, ShortStack operated on a flat management system, so I relied on almost every employee to be his or her own boss. My public relations manager often wrote and distributed press releases without approval. This process worked for us, because she knew what I wanted to convey to the media, and I trusted her to do her job without needing to be micromanaged. However, if youve never been given the freedom to make important decisions without input from your manager or executives, youll have to tread lightly. For example, if youre a graphic designer and you dont like the colors of your companys web page, you should probably ask a few higher-ups before unveiling a new palette. If its a smaller issue- like you notice a small typo on the site- you have a much better gelegenheit of being able to fix it without getting reprimanded. 2. Do You Know All of the Details? The best way to determine whether you should make an executive decision or not is to think like an executive. As a CEO, my thought process for nearly every decision begins with the same few questions Do our customers need this? Will it make them happy? Will it help the business grow? And perhaps most importantly, Do I have all the information necessary to make this decision?I recently had an employee make what she thought was a great decision- to switch the companys phone contract to a new provider. On the face of it, it looked like it was going to save the company a ton of money. What she didnt know was that we were two months away from the end of the contract with our current provider and were going to get a credit that would have gotten us a free year of phone services. Bottom line You have to make sure you know all the details- otherwise, your do-gooding could blow up in your face. Taking a moment to ask yourself the questions that your boss would ask can give you some insight about whether you should be making a particular decision. This will also help you remo ve your ego from the equation- because you should never make a decision just to win decisions should be made based on data and company goals.3. Have You Talked Through Your Idea With Anyone Else? Before you make an executive decision, its wise to consult with other people in the company, even if they arent executives, either. This is especially valuable if youre at a company thats a little more strict about the decision-making process. When multiple team members rally for a cause, its more convincing than when one person makes a decision single-handedly.Consulting with another team member can also provide a different view on the situation. Lets go back to the web page colors You may think they need to be changed, but by conversing with another designer, you may learn more about why the current colors were selected. There could be a strategy in distributions-mix that you didnt know about until you communicated with that other team member. Above all else, the best thing you can do to pr epare for these decision-making situations is to speak with your executives and learn your boundaries. Determine when its acceptable for you to make decisions and when its not. But in the meantime, if youre faced with a decision to be made, ask yourself these three questions, and youll be on your way to making the best decision possible. This 45-year-old study reveals why its so hard to break addictions

This 45-year-old study reveals why its so hard to break addictionsThis 45-year-old study reveals why its so hard to break addictionsOn June 17, 1971, the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, stood in front of a lectern during a press conference and declared drug abuse, public enemy number one, and continued to say that in order to fight and defeat this enemy, it is necessary to wage a new, all-out offensive. 17 months prior to this date, two U.S. congressmen, Robert Steele from Connecticut and Morgan Murphy from Illinois, traveled to Vietnam for an official visit and returned home with horrific nachrichtensendung that stunned the public over 15 percent of U.S. soldiers fighting in the Vietnam war were diacetylmorphin addicts. 2In response to ansicht reports, President Nixon created a new executive agency - the Special Action Of?ce for Drug Abuse Prevention - to promote prevention of public enemy number one and rehabilitation of Vietnam war veterans. But Nixon welchesnt don e waging this new, all-out offensive.Nixon wanted to figure out what happened to the Heroin-addicted servicemen once they returned to the U.S. And so, he commissioned this task to Jerome Jaffe- the head of the new drug abuse office- who in turn recruited a researcher named Lee Robins to conduct an extensive study into the addicted servicemen. The popular belief at the time was that Heroin is the most addictive substance and once you got addicted to it, you were hooked for life. But when Robins reported her findings from years of research into Vietnam war veterans, something didnt quite add up.Robins discovered that the number of Vietnam servicemen who took Heroin one year after returning home to the U.S. was shockingly low only 5 percent. And after three years only 12 percent relapsed. 3Considering the relapse rates of drug addicts at the time hovered around 90 percent, Robins findings shook the foundation of everything the clinical world believed about addictions.A puzzling question then is why is it so hard to break addictions? And how did so many heroin-addicted Vietnam war veterans, break their addictions in such a short period of time?Everything we know about addiction is wrongIn the early 20th century, a series of rat experiments were conducted to uncover the effects of drug addiction in humans, and some were displayed in the form of anti-drug television advertisements across the U.S.One famous 1980s advertisement said Only one drug is so addictive, nine out of ten laboratory rats will use it. And use it. And use it. Until dead. Its called cocaine. And it can do the same thing to you. 4The experiment was simple you take a rat and put it in a cage with two water bottles attached to it. One bottle is filled with only water. The other contains water laced with heroin or cocaine. Nine times out of ten, the rat will become addicted to the drug laced water, and keep coming back for more of it until it kills itself. 5It was from these experiments that the widespr ead belief that drugs caused addiction emerged. But in the 1970s, Bruce Alexander, a researcher at Simon Fraser University, conducted Rat Park experiments to challenge these ideas. 6To do this, Alexander placed rats in two separate housing spaces. In one housing space, rats were isolated from other rats and lived in small metal cages. In the other, 16 to 20 rats of both sexes lived together in Rat Park- a large housing colony with climbing poles, balls, wheels, open-topped cages, and an abundance of food and sex- in short, heaven on earth for rats.In both housing spaces, there were two separate liquids presented to the rats one contained morphine (an opioid class of drug) and the other, only water. The results from the experiments were astonishing.Alexander discovered that the isolated rats consumed significantly more morphine solution than the social rats in the Rat Park. In fact, during one l of the experiment where water and morphine were presented in alternative days, the Rat Park rats consumed even less morphine than they had done so in previous phases of the experiment.Coincidentally, Alexander had stumbled into the same conclusions about addiction, that Robins had also discovered a few years earlier during the Vietnam war veterans heroin study. This conclusion, which flies in the face of everything we think we know about addiction, was best summarized by Bruce Alexander himselfAddiction is an adaptation. Its not you- its the cage you live in. (SurceChasing the Scream(audiobook)The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs). 7The hidden force behind addictionAfter Robins presented the study that delivered a heavy blow to widely held beliefs that heroin addiction was unbreakable, a puzzling question mucksmuschenstill remained why did so many Heroin-addicted Vietnam war veterans break their addiction, almost overnight? To solve this head-scratching puzzle, Robins interviewed the war veterans and asked them to explain why they had stopped the use of heroin after returning back to the U.S. from Vietnam.8During the interviews, the Vietnam war veterans highlighted thatheroin was much easier to obtain and use in Vietnam than back home in the U.S.In Vietnam, soldiers could easily purchase heroin for an extremely low price of 6 dollars for a high purity bag (90 percent). Conversely, in the U.S., the price of heroin was much higher at 20 dollars for a street bag of 10 percent purity.9In addition, in Vietnam, Heroin could be easily smoked and did not need to be injected, unlike heroin use in the United States. This eliminated a major barrier to initiating the use of heroin. All of this combined with a social network of heroin-addicted fellow soldiers, extremely poor living conditions and high levels of stress from warfare, created the perfect environment for heroin addiction. But when the soldiers returned to the U.S. from Vietnam, they were exposed to a completely different environment. They no longer woke up to rattles of gunfire in Vietnam jungles and loud noises of helicopter blades in the middle of the night. Neither did they live with heroin-addicted servicemen or the high stress of warfare.Back home, the soldiers lived in much better living conditions, and like most American citizens at the time, theyd go to work during the day and spend their evenings with their families. The war veterans also noted that the fear of arrest and imprisonment, and strong disapproval from friends and family were strong deterrents from the use of Heroin in the U.S.In short, the environment in Vietnam made it much easier to get addicted to Heroin and much harder to break the addiction, than in the U.S. And vice versa. The answer to puzzling question was simplethe main reason why the majority of Vietnam war veterans broke their Heroin addiction was not because of willpower or a change in attitude- it was because of aradical change in their environment. This conclusion meshes well with studies that show that approximately 45 percent of what we do o n a daily basis takes place within the same environment.10For example, the mere sight of the entrance to an office building or a regular smoking area, is a powerful environmental cue to a smoker to go to this location and repeat the habit of smoking.Over time these environmental cues become so ingrained in our psyche that we repeat the bad behaviors on autopilot, even when we dont want to i.e. eating ice cream in front of the TV, reading emails as soon as we wake up in the morning and browsing on social media during working hours. This is why the hidden force behind addiction is environment, and the best way tobreak bad habitsand change our lives for the better, is to radically change our environment.Willpower isnt enoughThe mass media has sold us on the idea that addictions and bad habits are primarily driven by chemicals in our body, genetics, and lack of willpower and motivation. But as weve learned from the studies into the heroin-addicted Vietnam war veterans who returned home an d broke their heroin addictions, the main reason why its so hard to break addictions is the environment. The easier your environment makes it to act on a bad behavior, the less self-control you have to resist temptation and the harder it is to break the bad habit. And vice versa.Wed like to think that we control our actions, but in reality, environment is the invisible hand that shapes our behavior and nudges us towards the destiny of our lives.Mayo Oshin writes atMayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. It just gives that extra personal touch and will differentiate you from the other impersonal resumes theyll be receiving. Write down what you want to sayIts always a good idea to write down your key points and questions before you make the call. You dont want to read them verbatim and sound stilted , but it will help if you have them on pfote to enaya that you dont miss anything important. Base any questions on the job description or the information you have gleaned from your research. Having specific, well thought-out questions will impress them and show that you have read and researched with care. Also have a copy of your resume on hand in case they ask specific questions about your background and experiences.4. Set yourself upUse a quiet, private room you dont want your call interrupted by screeching children, mobile phones, music or passing traffic. Find somewhere quiet where you can focus and conduct a professional conversation. If you can, use a landline because mobile phones can sometimes drop out or have poor reception. Its also important not to chew gum, eat or drink while talking, but have a glass of water on hand in case your mouth gets dry.5. Practise your spielIts always a good idea to practise what youre going to say aloud before you make the call. You can play with different wording and practise until you feel comfortable and relaxed. Its important to not only tell them about yourself, but to listen attentively to everything they say. Jot down notes and ask questions using the information they give you. That will show that youre on the ball and are a good listener. At the end of your call, always thank the person for taking the time to talk to you. Remember to be courteous and professional with everyone you have contact with, including the receptionist. If youve been rude, the boss is sure to hear about it. If you have to leave a voicemail, clearly state your name and number and the purpose of your call. It can help to repeat your phone number just in case.7. How to Use a Mock Interview to Boost Your Job Search

How to Use a Mock Interview to Boost Yur Job SearchHow to Use a Mock Interview to Boost Your Job Search2Looking for ways to make a great impression on potential employers? Hone your presentation skills through a mock interview. You have plenty to gain through these practice sessions.Frankly, most of us are not used to talking about ourselves, and it is especially challenging to talk about our goals and background, and how our experience relates to specific opportunities, says Dale Austin, director of the Career Development Center at Hope College. Through practicing, candidates gain confidence in expressing key ideas and perspectives. They learn through mock interviews how to communicate specific examples that can demonstrate how their background can meet effectively the needs of an employer.Whether youre trying to land your first job or your tenth, consider the following when making a mock interview part of your job-seeking strategyChoosing an InterviewerObviously, working with a car eer coach or other trained professional can be a major plus. They know what types of questions employers likely will ask and have a knowledgeable eye for spotting potential weaknesses in your answers and delivery. They can give you focused attention and may have strategies for immediate improvement. For instance, Ryan Brechbill, director of the Center for Career and Professional Development at Otterbein University, notes that when conducting mock interviews with students preparing to go on the market, his staff emphasizes the learning aspect. Before we begin the practice interview, we let them know that they can call a timeout at any time to discuss/process the question and their response, and we, as the interviewers, may also do to the same, with the goal that concerns and constructive feedback can be shared at the moment the student begins to struggle or is uncertain how to respond to a question.College career offices also often provide free or low-cost services to alumni. Industry organizations and job support networks at your local library or community center may likewise be an alternative to hiring a private career counselor. Colleagues, friends, and family members also can stand in as interviewers. Ask them to pepper you with perennial favorites (Tell me about yourself), as well as not-so-standard questions that encourage thinking on your feet.Making the Most of the ProcessRegardless of who conducts the mock interview, record or (preferably) film it. Reviewing is essential to improving. As Austin notes, Many times candidates will be quite surprised to hear the number of verbalisms like um, ah, and well that they express unknowingly in the interview. They also plek up on unfavorable non-verbal cues, like rocking in their chair, fidgeting, and poor eye contact that can impact the outcome of an interview and result in not receiving a job offer. As you would for an actual interview, spend some time beforehand thinking about what makes you a good fit for specif ic jobs. Brechbill encourages interviewees to come in to mock interviews having identified the top three things they must share during their interview conversation- the most important and distinct examples the interviewer should walk away knowing. Having this information top of mind enables a candidate to practice weaving the responses.Dont get discouraged if at first you feel somewhat ill at ease during mock interviews. The great thing about them is that they can be repeated until a candidate gains competence and confidence. Consider mock interviews a no-pressure zone where you can experiment with ways to present your best self. Soon you might find talking about yourself becoming second nature, making actual interviews much less nerve-wrackingFine tune your interview skills even more with these job interview tipsReaders, have you used a mock interview to help you hone your interviewing skills? When to Use a Plain Text Resume

When to Use a Plain Text ResumeWhen to Use a Plain Text ResumeWhen to Use a Plain Text ResumeOne thing about resumes that seems to get swept under the rug is the idea of creating a plain text version. We all know how daunting it is to write your resume in the first place, and recreating it in plain text can be just as intimidating. So after all that time and effort you put into making your resume perfect and visually appealing, why would you need to make a second, bare-bones version?Mostly, plain text resumes are used for job hauptplatines. Even though job board sites are getting more advanced and allowing you to upload resume as a Word doc, you risk it being garbled by the resume formatting bot (as I like to call it), which leaves your resume looking completely different when it finally makes its way to the employers screen. What do I mean? Lets say your perfectly designed resume is constructed with the sections in this orderContact InfoProfessional SummaryExperienceEducationTechnical SkillsBut when it gets dissected and thrown back together by the job board bot, the employer could end up seeing thisEducationExperienceTechnical SkillsProfessional SummaryContact InfoNeedless to say, its frustrating to fine-tune the look and feel of your resume, only to have it botched by the bot.To avoid this, take the time to create a plain text version that you can upload to the job board. It might not be as attractive, but the job board wont mess it up. Plus, despite the dullness of plain text, there are ways you can organize the elements of the resume in an easier-on-the-eyes format. (Pongos Resume Builder does this for you automatically with multiple file formatting options.)And if youre emailing your resume and cover letter directly to employers, dont forget to send PDF or Word .doc formats unless they state otherwise in their job postings

Millennial Unemployment Rate Nearly 4 Points Above National Average

Millennial Unemployment Rate Nearly 4 Points Above National Average Millennial Unemployment Rate Nearly 4 Points Above National Average Expected seasonal hiring is likely keeping youth unemployment artificially low, and young people know all too well that a temporary job over the holidays is not a long-term solution,” Matthew Faraci, senior vice president for communications at Generation Opportunity, said. “The fact is that 2012 marked yet another year in which Millennials were unable to find real opportunities in the vocations for which they trained and are qualified.” This meant another year just scraping by, falling further behind on student loan payments, living at home with mom and dad, sending out hundreds of resumes, and filling out numerous job applications, all with little or no result. This was another year without hope for a generation eager to apply their skills and get in the game. As Washington argues over short-term fixes, Millennials are wondering why their elected leaders continue to ignore critical issues such as unprecedented youth unemployment as well as the larger challenge of addressing the nations underlying fiscal challenges.

Cover Letters The Icing on top of the Resumes

Cover Letters The Icing on top of the Resumes Cover Letters The Icing on top of the Resumes You read the outside of the bag and check the ingredients (and if you’re like most Americans, the caloric content as well).   The outside of the bag is the only legitimate thing that you have to go on when it comes to deciding whether or not you will buy that bag of chips. The exact same thing can be said for cover letters; they are the best possible way to convince a hiring manager to buy the chips, in this context, your resume.  A resume is something that tells employers what you have done, how long you have done it, and whether or not you were able to do it with a modicum of success. Your cover letter is the gold that will sell recruiters on your resume.  It is your opportunity to allow your personality and achievements to filter through and give companies a better idea of who you are, how passionate and motivated you are and, quite frankly, how badly you want a job.  Cover letters are the opening arguments to an intense court case. You’re the lawyer and you’ve got to sway the judge and the jury to rule in your favor. With today’s economy and job market, you’re doing your resume (and yourself) a major disservice if you aren’t submitting a personalized cover letter to each and every single company that you are applying to.  In a previous article, I talked about modifying your resume for different industries, and the same is true for a cover letter. The cover letter supports the resume and should, therefore, be personalized as well. So now that you’re convinced that you need a cover letter (because you most certainly do) how do you make sure your cover letter sells itself? First, you want to make sure that you’re individualizing it.  This means including proper format and addressing it to the appropriate party.  Most job descriptions will tell you whom to address your resumes to. If a name isn’t listed, check the company’s website to get the contact information for the hiring manager or HR department head. Avoid the typical “To Whom it May Concern” because this is impersonal. A cover letter is also a great place to explain any listed requirements or credentials your resume lacks. Maybe you might be short a year of the required experience or might not have the skill set in its entirety, but the cover letter gives you the opportunity to explain why the company should still consider you for the job.  Stay away from statements like “I’m the best candidate for this position” and, instead, just explain what skills you do possess, how you can utilize them for the role and how this will benefit the company. If you’ve got a an upper-level degree, such as a masters, and the entry requirement is a high school diploma, use the cover letter to explain that you’re aware of this difference and that you’re completely okay with it.  Follow up with your reasoning, for example, that you truly desire to work for this specific company for XYZ reasons, are looking to work your way up the corporate ladder, and willing to start from the ground up. Most important, your cover letter needs to tell the hiring manager why you want the job.  Honesty is the best policy. Recently an undergraduate student wrote a blunt cover letter for an internship stating that he was from an average university, would work for next to nothing, and didn’t want to waste the recipient’s time exaggerating his credentials or job titles. He said: I wont waste your time inflating my credentials, throwing around exaggerated job titles, or feeding you a line of crapp (sic) about how my past experiences and skill set align perfectly for an investment banking internship. The truth is I have no unbelievably special skills or genius eccentricities, but I do have a near perfect GPA and will work hard for you. Ive interned for Merrill Lynch in the Wealth Management Division and taken an investment banking class at [redacted], for whatever that is worth. This student was blatantly honest and I’m sure the recipient of his letter, as well as others, respected that. Companies hear applicant after applicant spew forth the “I am committed to excellence,” “I am hard working and dependable,” and “Working for this company will take me one step further to reaching my career goals” lines. You are unique; so, let this show through your cover letter. Avoid cliché, overused sentences and be honest about why you’re seeking the position. By the way, every employer knows, at the end of the day, workers work to get a paycheck. No need to be frank about this. 7 Tips for Running Effective Meetings

7 Tips for Running Effective Meetings 7 Tips for Running Effective Meetings Raise your hand if you love attending meetings. Anyone? I’m probably getting a Ferris Bueller-type response at that request, right? Now, imagine the task of overcoming that kind of negative reaction when it’s your turn to lead meetings. It’s not always easy to run effective meetings and ensure people are glad they attended. Here are seven ways to make sure you're leading effective meetings that are worth everyone’s time: 1. Know what you want. What do you hope to achieve through your meetings? Can your goals be accomplished without a formal gathering? Sometimes meetings aren’t even necessary. If you do schedule a time, create a written agenda for participants, including key topics and the names of people who might lead certain discussions. Distribute it in advance so everyone can prepare. 2. Invite the right people. Ever attended meetings that have little or nothing to do with your job? What time-wasters. Don’t be the leader who selects the wrong attendees. Make sure everyone invited to participate in your meetings has something valuable to offer and a stake in the outcome. 3. Be punctual. It seems like there’s always someone running late when it comes to meetings. Unless that person is your boss, make every effort to start on time for those who did show up when requested. 4. Stay on target. One of my personal annoyances with meetings is when they go off-track. You know, they start off focused on that big company project but end up shifting into a talk about problems with the office copier. All I can think of is the work I’m not getting done while people ramble. Those who know how to run effective meetings understand that a key part of the job is steering attendees in the right direction. If people get off-track, direct them back to the agenda. 5. Be inclusive. Some participants will speak up more than others. No one should dominate the discussion, though. If someone is making all of the comments, start asking others for their input. For instance, you might say, “Bill has made some great points about the new software. How do you think this will affect the rest of the administrative group, Jennifer?” If you’re running effective meetings, you make everyone feel a part of the idea-generating team. 6. Stick to the schedule. Meetings should wrap up on time. If there’s more to discuss, ask if people can stay or plan on a separate discussion later. 7. Follow up.  The process doesn't end after the discussion closes. You’ll want to send a summary to attendees as soon as you can afterward. This will remind participants about what was accomplished and what needs to be done. Do you lead a lot of meetings in your administrative role? What tips do you have for running effective meetings?

Three Things to Do About Your Employment Gap

Three Things to Do About Your Employment Gap Three Things to Do About Your Employment Gap I’m bringing up the survey today because one statistic in particular kind of bothers me: when asked “what is the best way for candidates to handle gaps in employment on a resumé, 57 percent of the organizations surveyed replied that “candidates should neither emphasize nor hide gapes in employment.” Sure, indecision is a terrible bane for leaders, but when it comes to letting jobseekers know what you’re looking for? Go ahead, be indecisive. Don’t give anyone a straight answer. Better yet, give them a we-can-neither-confirm-nor-deny-style non-answer. What I’m saying is: this is a total cop-out, and as such it leaves jobseekers hanging. They know what they shouldn’t do (don’t hide, but also don’t emphasize), but they don’t know what they should do. Not content to accept this nonsense, I wanted to supplement the SHRM report with some information that jobseekers could actually use. I can’t draw from personal experience - I’m young enough that I haven’t really even had time for an employment gap yet - so I did some digging, and here’s what I came up with: 1.) You did good things while you took time off, so share them … It’s not mind-blowing, life-altering advice, and chances are that you’ve heard it already, but that’s precisely why it merits revisiting: it’s easy to let good counsel sink into the oblivion of cliché. We have to rescue it from time to time. Oddly enough, I think this column from The Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times (of all places) puts it best: “But in many instances, there were several activities done during [the gap] that can provide relevant experience to the job target.” Well, maybe it’s not syntactically the best, but it’s the best in terms of concise expression of the idea: during your gap time, you likely did things that count as experience. Play that up. Did you volunteer somewhere? What sort of duties did you perform? What sort of responsibilities did you have? What sort of skills did you learn or hone? Even more quotidian tasks can be spun into valuable experiences. To quote the Times again: “Negotiating with health insurance companies and Medicare can provide opportunities for skills that were previously missing.” So, when you breach the subject of your gap time with a potential employer, focus on what you did, not on what you weren’t doing (i.e., “working,” in the strictest sense of the word). 2.) … but your resumé isn’t the place for explanations. Forbes staff writer Jacquelyn Smith wrote a pretty comprehensive article on the subject of red flags in resumés. Smith quotes professional resumé writer Ann Baehr as saying that “bad news or red flags should never be addressed in a resumé.” Your resumé is for documenting your skills and experiences, so stay focused on those. But it’s customary to include start and end dates on your resumé, so how can you avoid addressing the gap? Some people recommend using years only, instead of the traditional month/year combination, when disclosing employment dates in order to minimize the appearance of gaps that lasted for a few months. But remember: you’re not looking to hide the gap; you’re just looking to make it subtler, so don’t think this move gives you a free pass to lie to the interviewer. You should address the gap in your cover letter or during your interview. Of course, regardless of where and when you bring up your gap, you shouldn’t linger over it - e.g., don’t send the interviewer a lengthy email about it, and don’t dedicate half your cover letter to the subject. 3.) It’s okay to practice the truth. Honesty is perhaps the single most pervasive idea in conversations about employment gaps: no matter whom you ask, they’ll tell you that you should absolutely, positively, never ever lie. But just because you should tell the truth, that doesn’t mean you should sail unprepared into the interview. As recruiting firm WinterWyman points out, it’s a good idea to “refine your story.” They’re not talking about engaging in revisionist history or altering the details. They simply mean that you need to “get comfortable telling your story.” Practice delivering the story in a quick, direct, authoritative way. Whittle it down to the necessary details. Know the story like the back of your hand, so that you don’t stumble or seem foolish when your interviewer (inevitably) asks you about the gap.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. How to Work as an Art Critic

How to Work as an Art Critic How to Work as an Art Critic As of 2011, many American newspaper desks were slashing their features budgets, so many art critics and dance, film, and theater critics were let go. In such a bleak publishing environment, is it even possible to work as an art critic? In a word- YES. Even though the newspaper may soon become obsolete, there is a plethora of online art publications to write for, so the astutely driven art critic may be able to have a successful art career. Heres how. Become an Expert In order to succeed, you must first be an expert in your field. If you are an art critic writing about sculpture, then you must learn everything there is about sculpture: its history, significance, trends, key figures, sculptural techniques, etc. Stay Curious Art is a subjective business, so it is vital to stay curious and open-minded. Discover new artworks or look at older works in new ways. Constantly read widely in a whole range of subjects. Be open to the world as this will feed your art criticism. Be Active Visit art exhibitions. Go see art exhibits. Did I mention to go to art galleries, art fairs, museums, and biennials? In order to be a successful art critic, you must see a lot of art. One common art school assignment is to study an artwork in a museum for an entire hour. Youll be surprised by what youll discover in that amount of time. Write, Write, and Edit Jot down notes (via notebook or Blackberry or whatever) when you visit an art exhibition. Then write reviews. The more you write, the more you improve. Edit your reviews. Pitch Your Story Ideas Getting a magazine or newspaper editor to agree to your story idea is not the easiest thing to do. The Freelance Writing Guide provides sage advice on how to pitch editors and come up with dynamic query letters. Be Entrepreneurial If editors arent immediately giving you your very own weekly art column, then set up your own art critic blog. Contact galleries, museums, and artists directly about writing reviews for them. Think outside the box to come up with ways to work as an art critic. Publish Write brochures, catalog essays, travel guides, and books. Get your art criticism published by art galleries, artists, art institutions. Dont Give Up Like with any career in the arts, you MUST not give up. Tenacity and hard effort do pay off in the end. Build Your Reputation With art criticism, you will quickly gain a following as readers will either love or hate what you wrote. If your art criticism helps readers to gain understanding into an artwork, then your writing opportunities will surely increase as having a good reputation as a critic is key.

Why setting goals isnt always the secret to success

Why setting goals isn't always the secret to success Why setting goals isn't always the secret to success Feeling like you’ve achieved success can make all the hard work worth it, whether you’re hustling on  your own business  or  owning your role on a team. Are you feeling stuck or lost on how to reach your next milestone?  Sasha Heinz, a psychologist and life coach who focuses on emotional and behavioral change, recently reminded us that growth and achievement require much more than simply setting some goals. Your values, relationship with  fear and failure, and the questions you ask yourself along the way all have a big impact.Brit + Co: We’ve always relied on goals to point us in the right direction. When do you think setting goals is useful, and when, if ever, can they cause harm?Sasha Heinz:  Goals are important because knowing where you’d like to go is useful when setting out on a journey. But too often goals are something people do to themselves as they doggedly try to outrun their shame, rather than something they do for themselves to grow, develop, and challenge themsel ves to their edge. When I work with overachievers, I ask them to wait on setting a big goal until after we’ve spent a significant amount of time exploring and identifying their 10 core values (what I call Vital Values). Think about it like this: If your goal is the destination, then your values are the navigation system. Life is unpredictable, and you may not arrive at the exact location you pinned on the map, but if you’re following your Vital Value Navigation System, you’ll like and respect the person you grow into no matter where you end up and - trust me - you’re far more likely to enjoy the ride.B+C: You hear heaps of questions each day while working with clients. What types of common asks are generally unproductive? Why are these questions, in particular, most problematic?SH:  The quality of the world we see is (to a large degree) determined by the quality of our questions. So what kind of questions do you ask yourself? I’m going out on a limb here, but I’d guess that they might often be judgmental and therefore unproductive. Do any of these sound familiar to you? What’s wrong with me? Why do I always say the wrong thing? Why is he such a jerk? Why is everything always so hard? The problem with these questions is that the answers to them are extremely unhelpful; they narrow your focus to what you perceive *isn’t* working. Then you’re more likely to drop into a shame spiral, rather than feel motivated to take action.B+C: That makes perfect sense. Can you give us some guidance on reframing questions for more inspiring results?SH:  You need to practice asking powerful questions that offer you useful, expansive, and creative answers. So, instead of asking why nothing ever goes your way, try asking a question with a positive assumption already embedded into the answer. For example, “How much evidence can I find that things have gone my way?” Once you practice asking this kind of question, you’ll stop hitting dead ends and find yourself less stuck.B+C: How about failure? Why do you think we might feel afraid of being stuck, missing out, or making mistakes in the first place?SH:  The mere anticipation of failure (and its two handmaidens, disappointment a nd shame) can dissuade the best of us from going after our big goals and dreams. I believe we’re afraid of failure because we can’t stand to sit with the negative emotions failing can generate.I mean, when’s the last time you thought, “Disappointment, sadness, embarrassment, and shame… Whatever, no biggie”? Never. People are uncomfortable with these emotions. So in order to avoid them, what do we do? We fail in advance. We quit. We give up. We distract ourselves. We pretend not to care. But no matter how hard we try to numb those feelings, they remain deep, buried, and still powerful.B+C: How do you think we can improve our relationship with failure? We’d love any tips you have for ditching fear of it and sitting with tough feelings when they spring up.SH:  I know it’s a tough sell, but to improve our relationship with failure, we have to open ourselves up to these deeply uncomfortable emotions. The more we are willing to sit with negative feelings - disappointment, anxiety, fear, doubt, and the most dreaded of all, shame - the more we’ll be able to achieve. So how can you intentionally become more open to negative emotion? Start small and feel safe. Set a timer for two minutes, and visualize a time in your life when you experienced a failure. Ask yourself: What emotion do I feel? Where do I feel that emotion in  my body? What color is it? Is it fast or slow? If the emotion were a substance, what consistency would it be? Spend a few minutes observing how you feel the emotion physically. After the buzzer goes off, come back to a warm, safe place in your mind, and thank yourself for being willing to dive into the shadows. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Best Soft Skills to Boost Your Career

Best Soft Skills to Boost Your Career Best Soft Skills to Boost Your Career Most occupations require that those who work in it have certain abilities that allow them to do their jobs. For example, photographers must understand how different camera settings and lighting affect the pictures they take, teachers must be able to use certain techniques to teach math and reading, and computer programmers need to know how to use programming languages. These abilities are known as hard or technical skills and to learn them one usually enrolls in some sort of educational program where he or she receives classroom instruction and often practical training as well. To work in any occupation you also need what is referred to as soft skills. What Are Soft Skills? Soft skills are the personal character traits or qualities each of us has. They make up who we are, generally encompassing our attitudes, habits and how we interact with other people. They are much less tangible than hard or technical skills, and unlike them, you do not learn soft skills by enrolling in a training program. You can, however, acquire them through educational, work and life experiences but it will take a concerted effort on your part. Lets say, for example, you are terrible at managing your time but find yourself enrolled in a class that requires you to complete numerous projects. If you want to do well you will have to improve your time management skills in order to meet your deadlines. You can learn how to better manage your time by seeking advice from faculty and fellow students or reading helpful articles. Here are some types of soft skills.   Verbal Communication: People with good verbal communication skills have the ability to convey information to others by speaking.Interpersonal Skills: Having good interpersonal skills means that one has not only the ability to communicate with others but is willing to listen to people without judging them, share ideas and pitch in when co-workers need help.Writing: Good writing skills allow you to relate information using the written word.Problem Solving and Critical Thinking: Problem-solving is the ability to identify a problem and then come up with possible solutions. Critical thinking skills allow you to evaluate each possible solution, using logic and reasoning, to determine which one is most likely to be successful. Active Listening: Good listeners make an effort to understand what others are saying, interrupting only when appropriate to ask questions that will help clarify the information being shared.Active Learning: Active learners are willing and able to acquire knowledge and then apply it to their jobs.Organizational: Those who have strong organizational skills know how to take a systematic approach to every task.Time Management: Those who are good at managing their time know how to schedule their tasks in order to complete projects according to deadlines. They are good at prioritizing their work. Team Player: Those who are team players are cooperative and can be leaders or participants, as necessitated by the situation at hand. They are willing to share responsibility with other team members, whether that means taking credit for successes or responsibility for failures.Professionalism: This characteristic is hard to define, but its very apparent when someone is lacking it. Its probably the one trait that every employer desires, regardless of what you do or where you work. Professionalism encompasses many things including showing up on time, being polite, being generally pleasant and helpful, dressing appropriately and taking responsibility for your own actions. Reading Comprehension: Individuals with strong reading comprehension skills have little difficulty understanding the content of written materials.Flexibility and Adaptability: People who are flexible and adaptable react well to changes in their jobs and work environments. They have a positive can-do attitude about anything that gets thrown their way. Why Do You Need Soft Skills? Every single occupation you can think of demands that you have specific character traits, whether youre a doctor who needs to be an excellent communicator in order to convey information to her patients, a janitor who must have good interpersonal skills so that he can get along with his co-workers or an actor who must be persistent in spite of facing rejection over and over. An important thing to note is that soft skills are transferable between occupations. While you may have to go back to school to learn new technical skills if you change careers, you can always take your soft skills with you since they are valued in a variety of fields. In addition to what is required by your occupation, employers also expect you to have certain character traits. Just look at any job announcement and you will see a laundry list of qualifications that includes not only the technical skills you need to do the job but qualities like excellent communication skills, strong organizational skill, team player, and strong listening ability listed there as well. Even if you have the technical skills required for a job if you cant demonstrate that you have the specified traits you probably wont get the job. Make sure your resume lists accomplishments that demonstrate the desired soft skills and that you also find ways to discuss them during your job interview.
